I am super excited to introduce you to my new favorite breakfast shake.  Almost as fast and easy as cereal and milk, but much more nutritious.  This shake is a great combination of protein, fat and fiber that will sustain you and keep your blood sugar balanced.

Raspberry Goodness Shake

  • 1 tablespoon of Non GMO Soy Lecithin
  • 1 tablespoon of Maca (www. thrivemarket.com)
  • 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed
  • 1 cup of full fat coconut milk (I like Trader Joe’s in a can)
  • 1 cup of frozen, organic raspberries (I like Trader Joe’s)
  • 1 scoop of Nutiva Organic Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shake, Vanilla (best price is at www.thrivemarket.com)
  • 1/4 cup of water (I used hot water to warm to get my shake to room temperature)

Put all the ingredients in a blend until smooth.

If you prefer a less cold smoothie.  Put all the ingredients in the blender as soon as you wake up and give it a little blend.  Then let it sit at room temperature for about an hour while you get ready.

Here is some information about each of the ingredients in my new favorite breakfast shake:

Non-GMO soy lecithin has a myriad of health benefits although you may have heard mixed reviews about soy in the media.  Lecithin contains a little know B vitamin called choline.  Choline is found mostly in eggs, but not everyone can eat eggs.  Eggs are a wonderful food if you are not allergic or sensitive to them.  If you can’t eat eggs, you may need to look for other sources of choline.  Choline is essential for liver, memory and brain health.  Elevating choline can prevent neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s.

Maca is a superfood which grows super high in the mountains of Peru where no other food can grow.  Maca is a rich source of phytonutrients, amino acids, vitamins and easy to assimilate minerals like iron and magnesium.  Maca boosts energy, hormone balance and mood.  It has adaptagenic properties which means that it helps your body adapt to stress.  Maca adds an earthy sweetness to this shake.

Ground flax seed is rich in alpha linoleic acid which is an omega 3 fat.  Flax seeds are a great source of fiber and contain minerals such as magnesium and manganese.  The health benefits of flax include:  reduction of hot flashes and inflammation, prevent cancer and increase your body’s response to insulin.

Notice that I specified ground flax seed – this is because unless you breakdown the outer shell of the flax seed, you won’t get the benefits stated above.  Flax seeds are not broken down well by your teeth and will just pass whole through your digestive system.  Be sure to store the ground flax in the fridge as their oils are very delicate.

Coconut milk is my favorite non-dairy milk.  It is a great source of fat.  This fat is different than many others as it is a medium chain fat which is great for energy and brain health.  Medium chain fats have been shown to improve fat loss. Coconut milk contains lauric acid which has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Be sure you choose a full fat coconut milk in a can versus a carton.

Organic raspberries are a low glycemic fruit that is high in antioxidant, nutrients and fiber.  They are super delicious too!

Nutiva Organic Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shake is like a protein shake, multivitamin, probiotics and antioxidants all rolled in one.

Love it?  Hate it?  I would love your feedback.  Please share in the comments below.
