Contrary to the word on the street, it’s not normal or a necessary part of aging to forget things.  Memory loss can be caused by many factors:  nutrient deficiencies, not enough sleep, too much stress, hormonal imbalance, inflammation, etc.  I say that it’s not necessarily part of aging cause not everyone experiences it.  There are plenty of people in their 80’s and 90’s that are still as sharp as a tack.

If your memory is worse today than it was 10 years ago, this is an early sign that you may be suffering from cognitive decline.

On a scale of 1 to 10, what is your energy level throughout the day?

If your energy is a 7 to 10, you are probably in good shape.  If your energy is between 1 and 6, you may be suffering from low energy.

Feeling overwhelmed?  It’s like a mix of anxiety, depression and stress, like you just want to cry.  Overwhelm overpowers you and prevents you from taking action.

What do memory loss, low energy and feelings of overwhelm have in common?

These are signs of subjective cognitive impairment (SCI).  SCI is when a patient reports a worsening of their thinking abilities, including memory, but the decline cannot be verified by standard tests.

I always recommend improvements to diet and lifestyle – getting good sleep, managing stress and eating a whole foods diet.  But sometimes we need a bit more support.

These are my 3 favorite supplements for SCI:

Fish oil is an important source of omega 3 fat.  Omega 3’s are essential fatty acids.  Essential because we need to eat them to get them.  Our body cannot make them.  Our brains need these fatty acids for mental health, physical health and performance.  The Omega 3’s in fish oil consist of both EPA and DHA which have been studied and found to be helpful in brain disorders.  In the studies all brain disorders including depression, ADHD, and even traumatic brain injuries improve with the addition of fish oil supplementation.  I like Nordic Naturals brand.

Magnesium is required for more than 300 enzymatic reactions within the body.  It is also one that most people are deficient in due to over farming the soils so even buying organic won’t get you more magnesium.  Most farmers don’t put magnesium back into the soil in their farming practices.  Deficiencies in magnesium have been found to contribute to inflammatory conditions in the brain which include depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, other memory issues as well as insomnia.  I like Natural Calm brand.  It is a magnesium citrate form which is also good for constipation.  If you tend to already have loose stools, I recommend magnesium glycinate form.

B vitamins have an amazing effect on our mood.  The whole suite of B complex vitamins are important for nerve function and nerve cell metabolism which produce optimal neurotransmitter levels.  B vitamins are depleted easily with stress.  B vitamins are mostly water soluble as well which means that they must be consumed regularly in order to maintain the right balance.  My favorite B complex is B Supreme by Designs for Health.

If you are suffering from memory loss, low energy or feeling overwhelmed, I hope you will add these 3 important supplements to your daily routine.  Let me know how this goes for you.
